Captain’s Message

The aerospace industry is among the fastest-growing industries worldwide. In 2022, the market size was estimated at 321.5 billion USD and is projected to double by 2032.

At Queen’s Aerospace Design Team (QADT), we are dedicated to optimizing the development and performance of UAV drones for national and international competitions in Canada and Europe. With the rise in industry aerospace applications in recent years, QADT has seen an unparalleled expansion, and our dedicated team of more than 60 undergraduate students has not disappointed.

This year, QADT began and completed the development of a first-generation Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. This fully autonomous, carbon fibre eVTOL hosts an impressive 3-meter wingspan, four vertical lift motors for multicopter flight, and a pusher motor for cruise flight, allowing for 45 minutes of flight time at a cruising speed of 80 km/h. Notable features of the eVTOL include a custom 2-axis gimbal, complete autonomy enabled by a high-speed onboard computer, and a cabin for four simulated passengers.

Next year, we are going even further with new designs and initiatives as we prepare to expand our capabilities internationally.

QADT offers a unique development and design experience for students. Split into three divisions, Aeromechanics, Electrical, and Software, QADT is looking to continue its rapid growth and expansion by taking on like-minded and motivated individuals to continue the development of advanced drone technology.

We eagerly await your application.

Director of Software

In 2023, the new constraint of full autonomy was introduced to QADT’s target competition. Following this, QADT’s Software Branch was created. The Software Branch was imperative to developing the eVTOL aircraft moving forward. Competitions are predicted to build upon drone autonomy, namely perception and navigation capabilities.

QADT aims to expand the Software Branch to streamline communication, improve project management, and improve cooperation with the newly introduced Director of Software position. As part of the Executive team, the Director leads and oversees all software operations. The Director will work closely alongside the Perception and Navigation Subteam managers while directly coordinating QADT Captains.

The Director of Software can expect to gain skills in the areas of:

  • Project Management
  • Perception Software Development
  • Navigation Software Development
